The IEEE Region 10 Student Congress 2008

THE Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is the formal association of all Electrical, Electronic Engineers around the world. It is the largest professional organization of the world comprising of 370,000 members and 80,000 student member. The IEEE is divided into 10 regions around the world. The region 10 consists of all the countries of Asia Pacific. The region 10 holds a regional student congress in every two years. This year, the congress was held in Chennai, India. As the Chair of IEEE BUET Student Branch, I had the opportunity to attend the congress.

According to the IEEE Bangladesh Section, six of us were selected to attend the Region 10 Student Gold and WIE (Women in Engineering) Congress. They were Imtiaz Bhai, Lecturer of Department of EEE, BUET as the Chair of IEEE Gold Affinity Group of Bangladesh, Jahangir Sir, Assistant Professor of Ahsanullah UST and Student Activity Chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section, Jahangir Sir’s wife and the WIE Chair Ismat Zerin , Lecturer of Daffodil University, the Vice Chair of BUET Student Branch Anika, the Chair of AUST Student Branch Rizvi Bhai, and I.

The congress unofficially began on 27th January, as most of the student delegates as well as the respected senior delegates had already arrived. Besides Bangladesh and the host country India, student delegates from Japan, Korea, China, Pakistan, Thailand, Macau, Malaysia, as well as from Australia and New Zealand came to the congress.

The theme of this R10 Student Congress was “IEEE for Youth Leveraging Social Networking for Professional Development”. It was an accurate commemoration of mankind’s technical achievements and of IEEE’s diverse network of young people. The congress had a common day, 28th January, with the GOLD/WIE congress being held during the same time.

28th January, we went to the Auditorium and registered for the even officially The day’s program continued with a leadership presentation, and speeches by the President of IEEE, President Elect 2008 of IEEE John Vig, The Director of R10 Janina and Prof. Mini S. Thomas of IEEE Delhi Section.

In the Afternoon there was an Indian Cultural Program performed exclusively by the IEEE Student volunteers of Madras section with a variety of cultural items & folk dances, was greatly appreciated by all dignitaries and delegates.

The cultural activity was followed by the Student activities award ceremony which conferred awards to the winners of the various contests and new initiatives of the R10 SAC. Prof. Mini S. Thomas particularly mentioned about the BUET Student Branch which received the IEEE Enterprise Award 2006 competing with universities from all over the world.

On 29th January, we all gathered inside the auditorium with excitement and enthusiasm to enjoy the next day. The morning session started with a presentation by Cognizant Technologies, the principal sponsor for the student congress. The presentation was not one of the best events of the student congress, and many of us were nearly asleep when it ended. Then Prijoe Philips, the GOLD mentor for SAC of Region 10 got on to the stage.

The team building activities tested the creativity of the entire team and our ability to excel as a unit. It was amazing to see the way teams gave shape to their ideas. Each team were given 10 pieces of news papers, and asked to build a ‘Taj Mahal’ with them in 15 minutes. We divided the work in 10 segments and then built the segments and reunited them. Surprisingly each and every team could complete their Taj Mahals.

In the mean time, for the vibrant student branches of R10 Exhibition, the stalls of various student branches, about 19 in all, were set up for exhibition and evaluations. For our branch, I printed and laminated some pictures. Other branches made posters, banners, list of activities, and distributed annual magazines and pamphlets. The enthusiastically put up stalls proved to be tough to judge the winner, and it was only after a lot of discussion that the judges (Lewis Terman, President IEEE, John Vig, President Elect IEEE, and Roberto Marca, R9 Director) could decide the best four student-branches, BUET Bangladesh, NIT, Warangal, RASET, Kerala, and IGIT, Delhi.

In the group discussion session each of the groups was given a question to be discussed for 15 minutes. After that one of the team members had to go to the stage to highlight the main points. The suggestions were well appreciated by the dignitaries, Lew, John and Roberto.

After the exhibition and the group discussion it was time for the Multi Cultural show by the student delegates. There were lively songs and Kungfu from China, the Haka dance from New Zealand and the Kerala section presenting their entire culture in short pieces of dances and songs. Everyone just couldn’t get enough of it! Unfortunately in an earlier incident Anika sprained her ankle, and we could not perform on stage.

The last day of the IEEE R10 Congress 2008 was packed with enriching presentations and nostalgic memories. The certificates were distributed among the delegates. The closing ceremony was followed by exchange of gifts amongst delegates as a token of remembrance and affection. The student congress gave the delegates a wonderful opportunity to interact with peers from all over Asia-Pacific.

Following the closing ceremony, a tour to Mahabalipuram a world heritage sight, built in the seventh century by the Kings of the Pallava dynasty was organized for the participants. The Mahabalipuram monuments are rock-cut and monolithic, constituted by cave temples, rathas (chariots), sculpted reliefs and structural temples with beautiful beaches, which caught all of us spell bound.

After the congress, we had to take the same tiring 28 hours journey to Kolkata, stayed overnight there, and took the bus from Salt Lake, Kolkata to Dhaka. The bus journey took 16 hours, with a 2 hours stand still at Aricha Ferry Ghat. The worst part was, I had to attend class from 8:00 AM the next day.

The congress is over now. But I actually made a lot of new friends there, now we keep in contact through facebook and email. There is George from New Zealand, Dipankar and Ankita from Delhi, Zeeshan from Bangalore and many many more. I wish we could organize such an international student congress in Bangladesh so that we could also share the technical as well as the non technical knowledge from engineering students of different countries of the world.

Project Gutenberg: Enlightening the World Digitally

When I was a little boy, I liked classic books. My mother used to buy books of, Children’s Fairytales, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ ‘Tarzan Shamagra’; Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘Sherlock Holmes Shamagra’ all translated in Bengali. When I grew up, (I am twenty now), I wanted to read the original English versions of those books. But if you want to buy good quality English books, they may cost you as much $20. Moreover, it is not easy to find all old and famous books in a Bangladeshi book-shop. The book-stalls usually keep books that have higher demands in the market. An alternative solution to obtain copyright-expired books legally is also available today. You can try to read a book by downloading it and then reading it from your computer. Such computerized versions of books are known as electronic-book, or e-book.

There are many sites to download free electronic books. Microsoft has developed its own standard for e-books like the MS Reader format. A lot of free e-books can be found from Microsoft’s library, University of Virginia’s E-taxt library or Google Book Search. But the oldest and perhaps most famous digital library in the internet is still project Gutenberg.

Project Gutenberg: What it is

Project Gutenberg is a collection of different old texts, copyright-expired materials, drama etc. People of Project Gutenberg define it as “a volunteer effort to digitize, archive, and distribute cultural works.” It was founded in 1971 by Michael Hart and is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project aims at keeping the books “as free as possible”.

For that reason most of the books are stored in simple text (ASCII) format that can even be opened from a DOS based operating system. Some books are even stored in MP3 Audio format.

Meaning of ‘Free’ is ‘Freedom’

What is ‘Free’? Project Gutenberg tells us actually there are two types of ‘free-ness one is free as ‘free of charge’ and the other is free as ‘freedom’. Free of charge means that you don’t have to pay for the book you received. Freedom denotes that you may do as you like with the book you received. As for example you might receive a complementary copy of a book from a writer free of charge, but copying the book, redistributing it, or even lending it to a friend causes an infringement of the Copyright act. On the other hand, free as in ‘freedom’ means you may just copy, redistribute, or even reprint and sell the book. So free as in freedom beats free of charge. Almost all Porject Gutenberg e-books are both free of charge and free as in freedom.

The history of Project Gutenberg

The Founder Michael Hart was a student at the University of Illinois in 1971. He got access to a Xerox Sigma V mainframe Computer in the university’s Materials Research Lab. Through friendly operators, he received an account with a virtually unlimited amount of computer time. (Computers were expensive those days, unlike today, where all of us have virtually unlimited computer time) Its value at that time has since been variously estimated at $100,000 or $100,000,000. Hart wanted to repay this gift by doing something that could be considered to be of great value.

Incidentally, that particular computer was one of the 15 nodes on the computer network that later became part of the Internet. At that time Hart also believed that computers would one day be accessible to the general public and decided to make works of literature available in electronic form for free. He used a copy of the United States Declaration of Independence in his backpack, and this became the first Project Gutenberg e-text. He named the project after Johannes Gutenberg. Johannes Gutenberg was a German goldsmith and inventor and is usually considered to have invented the European technology of printing with movable type in 1447.

By the mid 90s, Hart was running Project Gutenberg from Illinois benedictine college. More volunteers had joined the effort. Hart later came to an arrangement with Carnegie Mellon University, which agreed to Administer Project Gutenberg’s finances. As the volume of e-texts increased, volunteers began to take over the project’s day-to-day operations that Hart had run.

In 2000, the Project Guetnberg Literary Archive Foundation, Inc. was chartered as a non-profit corporation, in Mississippi to handle the project’s legal needs. Project Gutenberg is now hosted by ibiblio at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At first most text was entered namually through typing until image scanners and optical character recognition software improved and became more widely available, which made book scanning more feasible.

Books available

You can browse though the enormous collection of books in the Project Gutenberg’s official website. The address is www. gutenberg. org If you are fond of classic books like me, then you’ll probably love it.

The site has books of Homer and William Shakespeare. You’ll get old thrillers like The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle), Adventures stories like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain), novels like Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen), priceless books like The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, written by Da Vinci himself, Grimm’s Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Washington Irving), Moby Dick, (Herman Melville) or even Albert Einstein’s Relativity: the Special and General Theory. Various translations of the Holy Qu’ran by the most famous translators such as Abdullah Yusuf, Marmaduke Pickthall, and Rodwell are available.

You’ll also get all books of Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, HG Wells, Jules Verne, Sir Walter Scott, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Plato, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jonathan Swift.

Thousands of books are downloaded every day from project Gutenberg. More than 2215410 persons downloaded books in the month of October 2006, only from their main main site. (Project Gutenberg records IP address of each computer, and does not count multiple downloads from the same IP address more than once.) But the servers are usually quite fast. Gutenberg maintains many mirrors (copies) of its archives on all seven continents.

The CDs and DVDs

The sweetest thing about Project Gutenberg is probably this distribution of CDs and DVDs. The CDs of Project Gutenberg contains their most popular 800 books, while the DVD contains the first 10000 books. The volunteers of Project Gutenberg distribute these CDs and DVDs absolutely free of charge. I requested for both a CD and a DVD of all the books, and got both in two months. After you have received a CD or a DVD, Project Gutenberg encourages you to re-distribute it to your friends, family or other people.

Precaution

You might face some problems when reading a book on the computer screen. For example, looking at the computer monitor screen, especially if it is an ordinary CRT screen for a long time may harm your eyes. Reading a book on the computer screen for hours is very strenuous for eyes. So if you can afford, try to take a printout of the book and then read. If you prefer reading the books on the computer scree
n, you should avoid reading for too long. Take a brake some time, and try to wash your eyes with cold water when possible. The Gutenberg e-books are normally in ASCII format, and thus they are by default viewed in the Notepad. Try changing the default font of notepad to a more eye-soothing font (Like Comic Sans MS), or download a better text viewer to read the books. The users with poor eyesight can increase the font size and read the books comfortably.

Project Gutenberg is intentionally decenralized. There is no selection policy dictating what texts to add. Instead, individual volunteers work on what they are interested in, or have available. The Project Gutenberg collection is intended to preserve items for the long term, so they cannot be lost by any one localized accident. In an effort to ensure this, the entire collection is backed-up regularly and mirrored on servers in many different locations.

Project Gutenberg aims at digitalizing and distributing all the famous but copyright-expired texts in the world. They accept e-books in any language if there are enough volunteers to contribute. We, the Bengalis should therefore give some thought about preserving and distributing out own literature through project Gutenberg.

The Legend of a teacher: Prof. Fazlul Karim

Today, the concept of a good teacher has changed. With minor exceptions we do not consider a teacher to be a good one by judging his class performances, rather we, especially school and college students judge a teacher with his suggestions, his Model test questions and above all – how accurate are his suggestion for exam. Many teachers are extremely reluctant about their Classes and are much more interested in private coaching. But as a matter of fact the respect for a teacher is directly proportional to his sincerity and hard labour. In fact we should judge how good a teacher is, by measuring his or her honesty, integrity and commitment to the profession. These should be the yardsticks of popularity. The popularity of a teacher among the students should not be judged only during the students’ educational period, but rather should be judged all throughout one’s life in the long run.

There are teachers who could hypnotize the students with their amazing power of teaching and incomparable personality and could win the hearts of the students forever. Such a renowned teacher is former Vice Principal of the Comilla Victoria College Late Professor Fazlul Karim who is my beloved grand father.

Professor Fazlul Karim was born in Comilla on 14th February 1911. His first school was Banga Bidyalaya, which was beside his house in Mugaltuly. He studied up to Class VI in Banga Bidyalaya. Then he studied in Comilla Zilla School and passed his Matriculation exam in 1930 in 1st Division under Calcutta University. He passed the Intermediate exam in 1932 from Comilla Victoria College in 1st Division under Calcutta University. He studied in Dhaka University from 1932 to 1937. He did B.A. (Hons.) in Economics in 1935. His MA was due in 1936. But he dropped for one year as he got married in 1936. He completed his M.A. in Economics in 1937. His subsidiary was English and Arabic. His favourite subject was English.

In those days Muslim qualified teachers were very few and in Comilla Victoria College, there was none. When Fazlul Karim wanted to join the College, the Governing body was not willing to take him. As they were reluctant to accept him as a teacher in the College they told him that they did not need a teacher of Economics, but needed a teacher of Political science. Fazlul Karim took their challenge and he joined Comilla Victoria College as a teacher of Political Science on 5th August 1938. Although he was a graduate of Economics, he was able to teach Political Science without difficulties. At that time he was the first Muslim professor of Comilla Victoria College. His happiest incident of life was being the Professor of Victoria College as he wanted to teach and serve his nation. As a teacher he was always sincere, dutiful, honest and strongly committed to his job. His morale was HONESTY. His ideal person of life was Hazrat Mohammed(SM). He used to tell me that he had also seen him(SM) once in his dreams.

One might ask what is my point to say winning the students heart forever? I met many of his students always asking my mother his well-beings. Professor Razia Khatun, A renowned professor of Dhaka University once told me some quotations, which my grand father told her in her first class in the college 40 years ago. I wonder how could any teacher influence a student so much that after forty years his student is quoting his lessons word for word. One of his ex-students Mr. Kamrul Islam said that he could exactly recall the way my Grand Father used to teach. He could also easily quote some quotations of Prof. Fazlul Karim after a long time. A retired Judge of Supreme Court was regretting that many of today’s campus violence would not occur if teachers like Professor Karim were in teaching profession. I think it just needs some thing special to win a students heart forever.

I think a teacher’s job is to teach. His sphere of teaching can be as wide as the universe. He should not just be confined within the boundary of his academic syllabus. He can also bless the students with lessons of ethics and noble thinking. He can teach the students how to leave a better life in the society, how to make the world a better place. A student would then listen to him spell bound. Prof. Fazlul Karim was a great educator of that kind. One of his quotations in his class lectures proves that. He said, “Every right has a corresponding duty, you can not enjoy the rights without duty.” He taught his students the noble lesson of fellow feeling, duty, responsibility and honesty.

As a teacher, Prof. Fazlul Karim not only instructed his students; but also inspired them. He left the permanent stamp of his outstanding and amusing personality on their moral character. He died on the 21st of April 2002 in the National Heart Foundation Hospital. It was the conclusion of a legend But however, the teachings, ideals, ethics, principles, values are not yet concluded. To change our blemished educational system into an ideal one, we need ideal teachers. And for that the teachings of Prof. Fazlul Karim can be regarded as the North Star.

Science Fair 2001

Achieving the first prize in the Science fair 2000, every body had great expectations on me in this year. So I decided not to show the old project this time. So living my old project, I started to work upon a new project and started to code my new project “Result Sheet Tabulator”(RT). But as I moved a few paces ahead with that, I realized that it is extremely difficult to make such a program without proper database engine and in QBASIC environment. It is too much time consuming and more over, anyone can tabulate result with any spreadsheet analysis program. Inventing something new is extremely difficult. And I also decided not to show things already invented by some one else (like Electric motor!) and also I would not take any kind of help from my parents. Thus I decided to use my old project “Computer in Shop Management” for this science fair too. Off course only the idea of the old project would be used. The program would be rewritten and completely Windows based. I took Md. Wasiuddin, my friend and classmate in my team. I designed some Forms, added code in them and gave them to Wasi to give a finishing touch. The program’s main job was to make cash-memos. But I did not like the coding of Wasi’s finished program. So I started working with it again. For four days except for the time of eating from 10 AM to 6 PM I worked and worked. I re-coded the program, debugged it, tested and tuned it, added additional features and also added background images. The new program was also named Shop Pro. The day before the fair, I bought some art paper. And from 6 PM to 12 AM, I made posters. Mean while Wasi was instructed to be prepared to take his PC to school.

In 23-01-2001 Wasi and I went to school for the possession of our stall. We occupied a huge amount of space and got the best spot in front of the black board. The fair was to be in the 2nd floor. Our room no was 208 and was the same room I used last year.

In 24-01-2001, I entered Udayan Bidyalaya at 8 a.m. I did not have my laptop with me this time; instead I had a bundle of posters and floppies with me. Wasi told me before that he would be late. I entered the classroom and began to stick posters. Wasi came at 8:30. Then we took the computer upstairs. We connected all the ports and established power connection. Then I copied Shop Pro from floppy to his Hard Disk. I also changed his wallpaper and made some shortcuts. After we finished doing every thing, we started to wait for the official inauguration. But unfortunately, no official inauguration was made this year and we declared our stall open at 11:15 AM. Our friend Minhajur Rahman was the first visitor of our project. Now leaving the stall with Wasi, I started visiting the stalls in the fair. That year the fair was really tough. Each and every stall had the capabilities of being champion especially in my group. The projects that captivated me were “Arsenic” by my friends Kshama, Amin and Shuvo, “Dengue” by my friend Hossain, “Radio” (Class XI), “Galvanometer” (Class XI) “Dream Land” by Nishat, Shamma and “Arsenic Hazard in Bangladesh” (Class IX) in my own group. There were also other projects like “www.udayanbidyalaya.edu” (Class VIII), The World of Microbes, Neem, and Termites etc in other groups. They were also great. As a matter of fact it was obvious that being champion was not an easy task any team.

I was extremely frustrated and needed at least something special in my project to hold the title. So I decided to convert the whole program into Bengali. I told Wasi to do it. Although I myself could do it, but I gave it to Wasi because I use Proshika Shabda for typing Bangla while Wasi uses Padma Script. Mean while I made some new posters. I also added topics of e-commerce in my project and downloaded some documents from Internet.

The next day Wasi and I entered the school together. Wasi translated the program well but in some places like menu bar and tool bar, there were yet to make any changes and I translated them into Bangla. The day before, there were only two projects that used computer. But on that day, two more computers were there in my room. One was in the Arsenic Hazard project used to make a slide show. Another one was a new project named Self Making Pizza Shop. Then at 9 o’ clock, I was almost forced to attend a quiz by Habib (1) sir of General Knowledge. Most of the questions were from Biology and because I did not have Biology, could not answer them. I don’t remember the exact time of the judges’ arrival. Most probably they came around 11 o’ clock. They visited our stall by twos. I showed them my project. They asked me questions, and shared their opinion with each other about the project. Whether they liked it or not it was d to guess. After the judgement the other two computers started playing music at high volume. I sent Wasi to bring his speakers that were kept in his home. When he brought them from his home we started playing Tegor
e songs. The food served in the fair was not bad. First day, a shingara and a samucha was served while the second day, a patties was our snack. I then visited the next room of our project. Kshamas said Hossain’s project was very captivating while Hossain said Kshamas’ project was getting the champion’s trophy. I, who was not present there during the judgement, did not know which one to believe. Wasi left the fair at
1 pm. I stayed up to 2 pm. I unfastened the posters carefully and kept them in my own archive. These two days I could not sleep more than five hours in the night. So I was too tired. And my eyes were red in want of sleep. But I had to stay in Abbu’s office up to 9 o’ clock. I slept from 10 pm up to 10:30 am and refreshed a bit. My eyes could not bear any radiation of Cathode Ray Tube and the whole day was spent idly.

The next day was a Saturday and I went to school for a result of the fair. But no result was given. I could not resist myself from dodging Emran Amin. I phoned him and congratulated him for being the champion of the science fair cordially. But he could hardly believe me and sent Imran Hossain, whose house is very near the school for investigation. Hossain talked with Mrs. Shivani Das, the moderator of our science club and was told that the result will be given in the next Tuesday. But no trace of result was there in the notice board in Tuesday. In Wednesday Tiffin brake, we were playing football. Then a trifle initiated a quarrel between Shuvo of our team and Ridwan of the opposition. Shuvo demanded a penalty kick and Ridwan would not give one. The game was over and Kshama and I want to check the notice board. Imran Hossain came along with me. The place near the notice board was extremely crowded. We however managed to bypass the crowd.

In the notice board, I first saw, “First: Kshama Sundar Roy”. The heading over it was “Result of General Knowledge Quiz”. Beside it titled “The Result of Science Fair”. I passed my eyes over the list. “www.udayanbidyalaya.edu” and “smoking is taking poison” were in the list of consolation prize. “Computer in Shop Management” was in the list of group D. It was clear that I did not get a consolation prize. Instead, I realized that I was the back-to-back champion of the science fair of UB. “Arsenic Hazard in Bangladesh” was second while “Dengue” was third. Surprisingly, there were no consolation prizes for any project of group D. Both Hossain and I felt sorry for Kshamas’ project that did not get any prizes. All my friends and classmates congratulated me. I went upstairs and gave Wasi the good news. And once again I became the champion of the science fair.

Science Fair 2000

Science is examination, observation and the knowledge acquired by examination and observation. A place where various science projects are shown is called a science fair. Udayan Bidyalaya arranges a science fair every year since 1992. In Udayan Bidyalaya, I saw a science fair for the first time in 1996. I was very young and wanted to participate too. For family problems, examinations, etc. I could not participate in any of the fairs among 1996-1998. In this new millennium, I got a chance to participate.

Most of my friends like to collect stamps or stickers. I like to play around with my computer. I operate a computer since class IV. In class VI, I started programming with QBASIC. My first program could make calendars of any year. I wanted to make a good program. So, for the salesclerks of the shops, I made software named “Shop Pro”. I made it just for pleasure, working hard for 3 months. When school announced that the science fair was on 6 February, I decided to present this program as my project. I retrieved my program using NCZIP.EXE and translated it using Basic Compiler. I decided the name of my project would be “Computer in Shop Management”. I draw some posters and modified my program a little. So, in 6 February, with my sister’s Laptop computer and my LX-800 printer I entered Udayan Bidyalaya. In the class room there was only one plug point and luckily no one else needed it. My project stood beside the door and there where also other projects like Forestation, Cloning, Evolution, Environmental Pollution, etc. Mr. Shahadat Ali, the chairman of the managing committee of Udayan Bidyalaya inaugurated the fair. He was impressed with all the projects and encouraged us. Then the fair started. Hundreds of viewers including teachers, guardians and students visited our projects. I am a bit taller than an average Bangladeshi and my bench, where the laptop was kept was very short. As a result, I had to stand bending my body downwards and forwards. For long five hours I had to stand still. So when I came back to home, I had severe muscular pain all over my body. Luckily I recovered soon and was able to go to the fair the following day.

This day, the judges were to come. So we were all nervous. Some of the participants were memorizing notes while others practicing their speeches. At half passed eleven five judges entered the room; none of them where known to me. I told my speech, showed them how the program works moreover answered their witty questions. The fair ended at half passed twelve and all of us were very hungry. Mrs. Shibani Das entertained us with fried rice and meat. She told us result would be given at eleven the next day.

So the next day at 11:10 AM, I entered Udayan Bidyalaya. There was a small crowed near the notice board. I bypassed the crowd. I was amazed to see that my project, “Computer in Shop Management” toped the list. It tops the list not only group C, scoring 23.6 points, it was the champion in the whole school and college. I was joyous and speechless. Fariz, Ovic, Sadi the friends of mine who were present there all congratulated me. Thus, I was the champion in the first science fair of the millennium in Udayan Bidyalaya.
